Stable staff Chief Executive’s charity bid hangs in the balance

A return to the saddle for National Association of Stable Staff Chief Executive, George McGrath, in aid of the Animal Health Trust at Newmarket on Saturday, 25 June, hangs in the balance after recent heavy rain threatens to scupper the participation of his intended mount, The Third Man.

The five-year-old gelding trained in Newmarket by Henry Spiller is entered in the Betfred “Racing’s Biggest Supporter” Handicap on Newcastle’s all-weather track tomorrow (Thursday), but will not take part at Newmarket on Saturday if the going is soft.

Europe’s newest racecourse opens in Stockholm

Bro Park in Stockholm, Europe’s newest racecourse, officially opens on Sunday, 19th June with a high-quality program featuring the Swedish 2,000 and 1,000 Guineas and an all-female international jockeys’ challenge.

The state-of-the-art facility owned by the Swedish Racing Association will stage racing on turf and dirt, and replaces Taby Racecourse as the home of racing in the Swedish capital.

Bo Gillborg Director of Planning and Development said, “The price of land in the region has rocketed and Taby Racecourse was rapidly becoming a ‘goldmine’. The facilities were in need of major renovation and it was obvious that the best value option was to realise the capital from the land and build a brand new facility from scratch.

Bevan is Chief Technology Officer (CTO) for ITN and brings with him a wealth of experience in broadcasting, in both operations and technology. Previously, he has been responsible for operational aspects and technology strategy at Sky Creative, part of BSkyB, following a broad strategic role within Sky’s Broadcast Technology team. Prior to that Bevan was the Technical Launch Director for Sky News Arabia, based in Abu Dhabi and launched in the Spring of 2012, the service consists of an innovative, state-of-the-art multi-platform news production facility to bring 24/7 news in Arabic to a MENA audience. Before joining Sky in 2003, Bevan worked as Engineering Support Manager at Orad UK, a real-time 3D graphics hardware/software company, responsible for the management of key customers across Europe. Prior to his time at Orad, he worked for the host broadcaster at the Sydney Olympic Games, having started his career at the Seven Network in Australia.

Stable staff rise to Starlight Charity challenge

Stable staff will be saddling up to support the Starlight Children’s Foundation at Newbury Racecourse tomorrow, Friday 13 May, by taking part in a unique charity event.

The Inter Stable Starlight Charity Race will follow an eight-race card under rules featuring the £30,000 Starlight Handicap, with the majority of the riders being full time stable-staff who do not currently hold a jockeys licence and who have each raised a minimum of £2,000 to take part.

Stars from home and abroad set to shine in £270,000 Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup

Frankie Dettori, Jamie Spencer, Silvestre de Sousa and Emma-Jayne Wilson have been confirmed as team captains for the 2016 Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup; the world’s premier international jockey’s competition at Ascot Racecourse on Saturday 6th August.

2016 will also see a further increase in prize money with all six races now worth £45,000 (£40,000 last year). Each participant will get five rides as they bid to win the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup for their team.

Last year saw the Girls team lift the trophy for the first time when they claimed three of the six races. Emma-Jayne Wilson, who captained them to victory, is back and will be joined by Michelle Payne from Australia, and Ireland’s Cathy Gannon.

Higgins to step down

After more than 11 years at the helm of RaceTech, Chief Executive, Brad Higgins has decided to step down from its board with effect from 31st March 2016 in order to pursue other interests. Having recently succeeded in negotiating a renewal of the outside broadcast contract with Racecourse Media Group, servicing its 34 racecourses until December 2018, Higgins feels now is the right time to move on.

"It is with some sadness but with a great deal of optimism that I have tendered my resignation to the Board,” he said.

Entries invited for £631,000 Scandinavian Challenge

A nine-race series for three-year-olds with prize money in excess of £630,000 has been created by the Swedish Jockey Club, in celebration of the 100th running of the Swedish Derby in July 2017, which closes on Monday, 14 March.

The prize fund for the historic 2,400m contest has doubled to more than £250,000, while supporting races in the series dubbed ‘The Scandinavian Challenge’ have all received significant increases.

All nine races will take place on the all-weather surface at Jagersro Racecourse in Malmo over three individual racedays, from mid-June to mid-August, with prize-money on offer topping seven million Swedish Krona (£630,000).

RMG secures Dubai Racing Club simulcast rights for the Americas and Caribbean

Online and retail customers in North, Central and South America and the Caribbean, will have access to live pictures and the opportunity to wager into official pools on races at Meydan Racecourse after RMG secured exclusive rights to offer races at the Dubai World Cup Carnival. The ground-breaking agreement, which lasts until the end of March 2016 includes all Carnival meetings and culminates in the running of the world’s richest horserace, the Dubai World Cup on Saturday, 26 March.

RMG, the holding company responsible for a range of media rights and management businesses involving 34 racecourses in the UK, will be offering racing from Dubai for the first time to customers in the region and access to the official pools, hosted by Isle of Man-based Premier Gateway International (PGI).

Marquand to benefit from HH Sheikh Mansoor Racing Scholarship Fund

The Racing Scholarship Fund (RSF), inaugurated in November last year following the International Federation of Horse Racing Academies (IFHRA) general assembly meeting in Abu Dhabi, is the first of its kind to help promising young talent - employed as an amateur jockey, apprentice jockey, or within the industry as a whole - benefit from the mentoring scheme aimed to stimulate career development and progression.

An innovative Enterprise Investment Scheme (EIS) offer for subscription promoted by My Bloodstock Plc launches this week.

The share offer, which is expected to result in a multi-million pound investment in British bloodstock, aims to provide aspirational investors with an interesting and absorbing introduction to the lucrative bloodstock markets with significant tax incentives. The Company also intends to pay a fixed dividend of up to 4.75%, subject to the availability of sufficient distributable reserves and other working capital requirements, payable on the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th anniversaries of the investment.

RaceTech secures new Racing UK contract

Investment in a new state-of-the-art High Definition outside broadcast unit and the refurbishment of existing equipment are to be among the benefits of a new contract between Racetech and Racecourse Media Group (RMG), parent company of Racing UK.

The contract will see RaceTech continue to provide OB services to leading horseracing channel, Racing UK, until at least the end of 2018.

Work on the new truck, which is expected to be in full commission by next spring, will begin immediately together with a phased programme to acquire new hoists, cameras, lenses and upgrade existing High Definition trucks and Standard Definition facilities.

Top Quality Field for Qatar International Stakes (Group 1 PA)

A superb field of 16 horses has been declared for the Qatar International Stakes (Group 1 PA). Previously listed as the Harwood International, this is the first time the race has been included in the Qatar Goodwood Festival and it will be one of the highlights of the final day of the meeting.

Run over one mile (1600m) it is the first leg of the inaugural Doha Triple Crown, a valuable new ini-tiative with a $1 million bonus for any horse that can claim all three races. The second leg is the 2000m Qatar Arabian World Cup, run at Longchamp in October, with the final leg in Doha in Febru-ary, the 2400m HH The Emir’s Sword.

Stage set for Arabian showcase

The stage is set for the most exciting renewal yet of the Dubai International Arabian Races at Newbury Racecourse on Sunday, 26 July which boasts a day of top class Arabian racing, valuable prize giveaways, family entertainments and free admission for all.

A golden celebration for starting stalls

Newmarket’s Moet & Chandon July Festival meeting marks an important milestone in racing’s history this week when RaceTech celebrates the 50th anniversary of the introduction of starting stalls.

On 8 July 1965 Newmarket’s Chesterfield Stakes, a race for two-year-olds and won by Track Spare ridden by Lester Piggott, made racing history by becoming the first horserace in Great Britain to be started from stalls.

After further tentative use at Newmarket during the remainder of the 1965 season, stalls were formally adopted as the fairest method of starting races on the Flat and were rolled-out across 135 racedays the following year.

Al Shaqab duo head nominations at Forfeit stage

Al Shaqab Racing’s Al Mourtajez and Mister Ginoux head a total of 46 nominations that stand their ground at the forfeit stage for the £400,000 Group 1 Qatar International Stakes for Purebred Arabians, (formally listed as the Harwood International) the first leg of the inaugural Doha Triple Crown.

Mister Ginoux enhanced his already high reputation by winning the Qatar Derby des Pur-Sang (Gr2 PA) at Chantilly last Sunday, taking his unbeaten run to five for trainer Thomas Fourcy, who also trains top-rated Al Mourtajez.

The former is among a number of International horses that will now have their ratings re-assessed, having run since the original nominations, although all ratings will again be evaluated by the International Federation of Arabian Horse Racing Authorities (IFAHR)after the supplementary stage on 22 July.

Qatar International Stakes entry exceeds expectations

A total of 60 nominations have been received for the £400,000 Group 1 Qatar International Stakes for Purebred Arabians, (formally listed as the Harwood International) the first leg of the inaugural Doha Triple Crown, which will be run on the final day of the Qatar Goodwood Festival on Saturday, 1 August.

Among those bidding to be the first to stake their claim on the Doha Triple Crown’s $1 million bonus are Al Mourtajez and Al Majh’hoor, who finished first and third respectively in this year’s HH The Emir’s Sword, which in February 2016 will form the final leg of the contest following the €1 million Qatar Arabian World Cup at Longchamp in October.

Arabian Racing Organisation Racing Manager Amanda Smith said, ‘The initial entry has certainly exceeded expectations. Based on two previous runnings of the Qatar Harwood International, previously run at Doncaster for £150,000, I had hoped that we would receive a minimum of 50 nominations, so we are delighted with both the size and the quality of the entry.

STATS Turf Flat season gets underway at QIPCO Guineas Festival

Newmarket’s QIPCO Guineas Festival which begins on Saturday, 2 May, will be the first in a series of high-profile Flat racing festivals to benefit from TurfTrax Sectional Timing and Tracking System (STATS) coverage this season.

The announcement follows a joint commitment by Channel 4 Racing, Newmarket Racecourses, Goodwood Racecourse and York to provide the service.

Racegoers, television viewers and sectional timing analysts can look forward to enhanced information from Newmarket’s July Festival Meeting, the Qatar Goodwood Festival, The York Ebor Meeting and Dubai Future Champions Festival at Newmarket in the autumn in addition to the Guineas Festival, with other key race dates likely to be added later in the year.

The world’s largest airport retailer celebrated a 20 year association with British horseracing at the Dubai Duty Free Spring Trials Weekend at Newbury Racecourse, UK on Friday 17 and Saturday, 18 April.

Now title sponsors of four major horseracing events in Great Britain and Ireland, Dubai Duty Free made their first venture into racing in April 1996 when they gave their backing to a Group 3 fillies’ trial previously supported by Gainsborough Stud, the racing and breeding operation established by the late H.H. Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

Dubai Duty Free entertained more than 150 guests of over the two days of the meeting who included H.E Mirza Al Sayegh Director of the Office of H.H. Al Basti Equiworld builds future for Greatwood

Greatwood, the charity which combines delivery of pioneering education programmes with the rescue and rehabilitation of ex-racehorses, officially unveiled a brand new facility today with the help of Al Basti Equiworld.

The Al Basti Equiworld Classroom will allow Greatwood to expand its teaching programmes which are specially designed to educate disadvantaged children and develop life skills in young adults with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).

The classroom at the Wiltshire-based charity was formally opened today by Arun Menon, General Manager of Al Basti Equiworld, the UAE’s leading distributor of horse feeds, supplements and veterinary products which has funded the project. Al Basti Equiworld’s contribution also extends to supporting the salary of a newly appointed teacher for the next three years.

Double delight for H.E Sheikh Joaan

Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani watched his new Arabian racing star Al Mourtazez and Qatar’s champion thoroughbred Dubday as they brought the large crowd to their feet by winning the season’s two richest races, the HH the Emir’s Sword and the HH the Emir’s Trophy, both with Group 1 status over 2400m, in contrasting styles at Al Rayyan racecourse on Thursday 26 February 2015.

Al Mourtazez, trained in France by Thomas Fourcy, marked his first appearance in Qatar with an all-the-way success, while Dubday, whose trainer Jassim Al Ghazali saddled five winners on the card, got to the front in the final six strides, when they lit up the night sky on the final session of the meeting staged under the patronage of HH Sheikh Tamin bin Hamad Al Thani as part of the eight-day HH the Emir 24th International Equestrian Sword Festival.

Broadcast first for festival features

Qatar’s two most prestigious races for Thoroughbreds and Purebred Arabians are set to be broadcast in the UK for the first time this week by leading dedicated satellite horseracing broadcaster, Racing UK.

The Group 1 contests which provide the finale to the H.H The Emir 24th International Equestrian Sword Festival will form part of the channel’s broadcast of live racing from Ludlow and Meydan this Thursday, 26 February.

Viewers will have the chance to see Frankie Dettori partner Dubday, who runs in the colours of Al Shaqab Racing, in his bid to become the first horse in a decade to win back-to-back runnings of the H.H The Emir’s Trophy (3.30 p.m.), a 1200M contest on Turf for Thoroughbreds three-years-old and over and worth QR 1.9 million (Euro 460,000).
